I believe it is important to gather information about health professionals (especially psychologists) before you start working with them. Please review the information below about my training and professional experience. If you have any further questions, please do not hesitate to contact me by email (roger@drcovin.ca) or phone (514-465-5151).
I am clinical psychologist who is fully registered with the Order of Psychologists of Quebec. While I do treat a range of problems (ex: personality problems; stress), I specialize in the assessment and treatment of depression, anxiety and chronic pain. I am also a regular contributor to the Huffington Post and author of the book "The Need to be Liked."
I received my B.A. (Honour’s – Psychology) from Cape Breton University. I then received an M.A. and Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from The University of Western Ontario (UWO). I completed my residency training with the Calgary Health Region in Calgary, Alberta. Over the course of my clinical training, I've worked in a range of programs, hospitals and clinics. The following is a list of some of these training sites:
(1) Psychological Services (Student Development Centre) - University of Western Ontario
(2) Schizophrenia Treatment and Research (STAR) Program - London Psychiatric Hospital
(3) Rheumatology Day Program - St. Joseph's Hospital (London, ON)
(4) Department of Psychology - South Street Hospital (London, ON)
(5) The Diabetes, Hypertension and Cholesterol Centre - Health on Twelfth (Calgary, AB)
(6) Cognitive Therapy Service - Health on Twelfth (Calgary, AB)
(7) Urgent Care Services - Rockyview Hospital (Calgary, AB)
(8) Department of Psychology - Foothills Hospital (Calgary, AB)
Over the course of my training and work as a psychologist, I have practiced psychology at various hospitals and clinics in Ontario and Alberta. I have also been fortunate to work with some very talented and recognized psychologists. I was trained to be a scientist-practitioner, meaning I am committed to staying informed of important research findings that could affect how I practice.
I began my career with the First Episode Mood and Anxiety Disorders Progam (FEMAP) at University Hospital in London, Ontario. This was a pioneer program in Canada because its target population included individuals either experiencing, or at risk of experiencing, a mood or anxiety disorder. I assisted in the development of the program, conducted research, and provided clinical services to patients.
I eventually made a transition from the hospital to private practice to focus more on clinical work with patients. I spent a considerable amount of time treating chronic pain, particularly individuals who had been injured at work or in car accidents.
I have since moved my practice to Montreal, where I have an office in Westmount's Victoria Village (245 Victoria Ave.).
In addition to my clinical work, I have always been active as a researcher. Over the course of my academic/ research career, I have won a variety of awards and scholarships, presented research at national and international conferences, and also published a number of peer-reviewed articles and book chapters. Below is a sample of some of my research publications.
